ROULIER, LAMB, BIEHL, and DAMMEL

December 4th - December 20th, 2020

First Friday Reception: 12/4 6-10pm

Artist Reception: 12/11  6-9pm

Closing Reception: 12/18  6-9pm

After Midnight - Claudia Roulier

This body of work by Roulier continues her ongoing theme of mystery, dystopia, and curious circus acts with anthropomorphized animals taking center stage as they so well deserve. In this show she features more drawing than paintings. This is a world where up is down and down… is nowhere to be found. “Right now, I am wondering... who is watching, who is watching the watchers, and what can we do about it?”

Metalmorphosis - Michelle Lamb

Lamb creates highly refined assemblages using typically obsolete or common found metal objects along with her purposely patinaed substrates and upcycled objects cleverly metallized so as to create an integral whole. Her intricate compositions evoke a curious need to solve the riddle of how an object’s original design and intent can be morphed into an entirely new narrative.

New Works - Susie Biehl

Biehl’s love of textures, colors and interesting juxtapositions of found and recycled objects create three dimensional abstract expressionistic compositions that evoke beauty from what is typically considered junk. This is upscale upcycling that is both playful and yet profound.

Into Nature - Rochelle Dammel

Rochelle Dammel uses her background as an intuitive abstract artist to explore the color, texture and shapes of nature in her latest show "Into Nature". Working with brush, palette knife and graphite, she explores her interpretation of Colorado rivers, trees, lakes and mountains. Her range of subjects and candid use of the written word offers a surreal view into how she sees and feels nature's wildness, healing force and beauty.

please join us with masks and social distancing

Small can be dynamic! This juried Open Call show features artwork in any medium 12 inches or less.

Gina Caswell, Barbara Veatch, Tracey Russell and Sam Smith

October 23rd - November 8th, 2020

Opening Reception: Friday, 10/23 6-9pm

First Friday: 11/6 6-10pm

with masks and distancing

New Works - Gina Smith Caswell

Still lives are the subject matter of the new body of work by Gina Smith Caswell.  They are traditional still lives that explore pattern, bright color and texture.  Although the paintings are themselves medium sized, the subject matter feels larger than life. The colors are vibrant and the paintings a lush exploration of various fruits and vegetables, including exotic ones such as dragon fruit.

Symbolic Nature - Barbara Veatch

Symbolic Nature, an exhibit of mixed media works on paper began in mid-March 2020, as a commitment by the artist to find and create beauty during harsh and disturbing times. The works don’t overtly reference anything political, but seek to celebrate beauty, and create moods and tensions, through the use of symbols lifted from nature: sky, earth, mountains, storms, fire, flora, and fauna.

Sometimes in the midst of a cultural maelstrom, simple beauty can provide hope. The artist states that this is what she hopes the exhibition might bring to viewers.

Abstract Paintings - Tracey Russell

Tracey Russell’s recent abstract expressionist work is based upon her perceived awareness of the natural environment. She recaptures the subtle mystery or “numinosity” of nature on a 2 dimensional pieces of birch panel.

Russell uses several layers of oil paint, wax, graphite, oil stick and pigments and then scratches textures or expressive lines into the medium with different tools revealing the layers beneath.

In the Annex:

Emotional Distancing - Sam Smith

Emotional Distancing is a five-year retrospective of Sam Smith’s abstract paintings and collages. Emotion is the inspiration for all of Smith’s work. Joy, pain, humor, and loss are all on display here. As a body of work, this show traces the personal journey of an artist profoundly moved by the beauty of the universe and deeply concerned at the prospect of humanity losing its place in it.

Christine O'Dea and Kathy Michell-Garton

October 2nd - October 18th, 2020
First Friday Reception: 10/2/20 – 6-9pm
With face coverings and physical distancing

“Of Dreams, Trees, and Threes” – Christine O’Dea

This new body of ceramic mixed media work by Christine O’Dea was gradually created over the past few years and was completed during this pandemic. The symbols, objects, and repetition of forms were initially inspired from several dreams which thread their way into wake time. These stories of slumber segue the space between wake and sleep, beauty and torment, struggle and safety, fear, trust, and hope. The multiple sculptures in this installation weave a dialogue of sorts within life’s ups and downs as we individually and collectively move through our days and nights.

Interrupting the Narrative” — Kathy Mitchell-Garton

Everything has changed. Everything IS change.
This new body of textile and mixed-media work by Kathy Mitchell-Garton was created primarily during the coronavirus pandemic. Unable to access her familiar artistic processes, both physically and emotionally, Mitchell-Garton scaled down her practice and focused on the comforting repetition of stitching. This interruption, during this time of upheaval, led to explorations of impermanence, death, and cycles of change, as well as experiments with new forms and materials. Working from home, grounding in meditation practice and the daily connection with the natural world of her backyard garden, and the unexpected discovery of a stash of antique family linens, increased the artist’s awareness of the rhythms of life and the countless moments in which we can interrupt our narrative. Thoughts of returning to ‘normal’ lose their meaning with the awareness of the true nature of life, which is change.

AQUA

September 11th - 27th, 2020
Opening Reception: Friday 9/11 6-9pm
Gallery uses safe practices with mandatory face coverings

CORE New Art Space presents the Aqua/Water exhibit. This open call show was juried by Chris Stevens, an experienced juror and currently the Cultural Arts Manager for City of Greenwood Village. A wide variety of both 2d and 3d artists utilized all types of mediums and explored all aspects of Aqua, whether employing the various shades of that gorgeous greenish-blue color or the world of water and all it encompasses.

CHUVARSKY, VAUGHT, NOBODY

August 21st - September 6th, 2020

Artist Reception: Aug. 21st  6-9 pm

First Friday: Sep. 4th  6-9 pm

with face coverings/social distancing

“Things Fall Apart” - Earl Chuvarsky

Originally conceived during the political maelstrom of 2016, these paintings portray Chuvarsky's ongoing exploration of uncertainty. Just as most of the world stalled in early 2020 - so too does his subject matter, which is suspended in a moment of limbo. His placement of subjects within the picture plane invokes intriguing feelings when floating in an ether devoid of conventional surroundings.

“Collective Humanity" - Julie Vaught

Julie Vaught’s oil paintings reflect the life stories of our collective humanity through portraiture.  The portraits are meant to express mankind’s shared yearnings for freedom, for a life free from suffering, and for a connection with others. There are portraits included of the early settlers of Dearfield, Colorado. Due to Covid, The Black American West Museum was unable to open this summer and needs our support as a community!  All sales will benefit the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center.

gina smith caswell, Richard Neff, J. Bruce Wilcox

July 31st - August 16th, 2020

Improbable Dimensions-Richard Neff

Richard Neff’s confounding abstract geometrics rely strongly on architectural elements. His art explores the depths and constructs of the third dimension. The illusions created by shape and shadow are impossible, improbable and intriguing. Color builds upon shape and design to draw the viewer into the experience. Neff’s work reflects his desire to see below the surface, in life situations, in people, and in himself. He has drawn since the time he could pick up a pencil, but only arrived at the magical transformation of acrylic on canvas later in life.

Included in the exhibit is work by his son Michael Neff, whose work is influenced by natural and geometric forms and explores the interplay between depth, form and color. He lives in Lakewood with his wife and son.

RIOT! The Politics Of Everything - J. Bruce Wilcox

Wilcox is a well-known Fiber/Textile Artist with a 40+ year reputation. Though people STILL refer to his art as a “quilt” it has nothing to do with a bed, keeping you warm, or your grandmother. Wilcox has demolished all quiltmaker traditions, pushing every boundary over the proverbial edge.

Conceived a year ago knowing 2020 would be a charged political year, Wilcox was surprised how fitting the title “RIOT!” became in relation to actual current events. Politics have invaded everyday life, rioting is everywhere, and it’s life or death during this global pandemic. Come experience a riot of color, shapes and exquisite stitchery.

The Dog Prints - Gina Smith Caswell

As an undergraduate at CSU Gina worked tirelessly for two years in the print room focusing primarily on lithography. Doing large black and white and color prints, her subject matter were her family dogs. Caswell wasn’t interested in making “portraits” of them but instead used photographs she took in order to create iconic images of nature. “I explored my life time fascination with pattern and texture while drawing these images.”

BLACK & WHITE

July 10th - July 26th, 2020

Reception: Friday, July 10th, 6-9 pm

This exhibition seeks to show art that has cast away the color system and focuses on the visual power of black and white; reflecting the innovative and contemporary in painting, photography, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture. Artists across multiple and interdisciplinary mediums were juried by Gary Reed, a Denver based photographer and mixed media artist.

As an avid contributor to the community, Gary has served and is currently serving on several art related board of directors ranging from high school art programs to the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Art District on Santa Fe and the 40 West Arts District.

Robert Davis Garner and Stephanie Kuhne

Show runs: June 19 - July 5

Opening Reception: Friday, June 19, 6-10pm

First Friday: July 3, 6-10pm

“Act I: Family Fugue” - Robert Davis Garner

Robert David Garner is a Denver based figurative artist. Garner has recently exhibited locally as well as shown in NYC and Santa Fe, NM. His latest works focus on his childhood. Pulling imagery from childhood, religion, music, other artists and current events, Robert creates a striking and dramatic scene that intrigues his audience. While uncomfortable at times, the viewer is nonetheless pulled in and left wanting to understand more. You can see more of his work on Instagram @robertdavisgarner

“Believe It or Not” - Stephanie Kuhne

Kuhne explores why myths, stories, legends and folklore exist. She believes they explain certain of life’s circumstances and for cultures to creatively address the “why” of life.  Stories can overlap to connect cultures not only within history but also in a collective consciousness, morphing and coming alive again to address current belief systems. Kuhne’s interpretations focus on her interest in a variety of subjects and memories all connected by this undercurrent of myth.

In the Annex:

Darlene Kuhne - “Legacy”

Born a creative force, Darlene considered herself an abstract expressionist color field painter. This retrospective exhibit features work where color is the constant ribbon, that was manipulated through layering, splattering, dripping and squeezing wet and dry pigments all manipulated with great expression. Kuhne’s acrylic & mixed media paintings show how she was always changing and evolving.

The Architecture of Form

May 29 - June 14

Artist Reception: Friday, June 5th, 6 - 8 pm

This exhibition curated by Jude Barton seeks to stand apart from the interpretive bias of the viewer and honor the vocabulary of geometry. The art of geometry is self-referential and intrinsically rejects socio-political and cultural involvement. It is the purest form of egalitarian expression and accessible to all; there is no mystery and no partiality. The architecture of form provides an aesthetically pleasing framework in which the artists selected for this exhibition may express his or her “inner necessity” as expressed in Kandinsky’s “Concerning the Spiritual in Art” (1911). The shape, color, composition, movement and form emerge through the artists’ own inner dialog and interaction with the vocabulary of geometry.

Member Show Spring 2020

Fourteen members fill the entire gallery with a wide array of fine art. Virtually every medium and discipline will be on display so that means there’ll be something for everyone. Speaking of virtual, in light of the Covid crisis, we will be video-taping the exhibit to post as a virtual tour around April 22nd. This will be an added bonus to what we hope will be an “open to the public” gallery at some point during the show’s run which is April 17th - May 17th. Reception to be announced later if we are able to be physically open. Check out our FB page for updates at https://www.facebook.com/corenewartspace/

Jude Barton and Chuck McCoy

March 6 - 22, 2020

Opening Reception: March 6, 6:00 - 10:00 PM

Special Event: Friday, March 20 6:00 -10:00 PM Artist's Reception

with International Gypsy Jazz guitarist Aaron Walker 7:00 - 9:00 PM

Axioms - The Edge of Neo Modernism: A revitalization of form - Jude Barton

Jude Barton’s colorful abstracts have a strong affinity with architecture, music and geometric axioms. She refers to her work as Neo Modern Formalism which acknowledges process and materiality but confines those elements to a subordinate position. Barton sees her work as a reassertion and revitalization of modernism. She believes that the attenuated thread of modernism has remained just under the surface of postmodern expressions and is currently in a period of reemergence.

Afterimages - Chuck McCoy

What do you see when you close your eyes? What do you see after you stare? Afterimages. The ghosts of things seen and thought. According to McCoy these are the things that roll around in his head while working on these new pieces combining digital inkjet, CNC routing and painting on plastic and wood panels and paper. Starting with a rational framework such as the golden ratio and tatami mats he then takes them to unexpected and irrational places. As he says “Since I’m creating major elements entirely with a computer I can zoom in and out of structures as I build them and play with the elements that appeal to me, all the time trying to imagine what they will look like when I hand the files to the fabricators.” The results can be unexpected, much like life. Both artists are participating in the Month of Printmaking. Barton with screenprints along with acrylic paintings. McCoy with further explorations of digital inkjet used in a variety of techniques and materials.

Nicola Stefano - Abstracts in the Annex

There are those that have a way with words, then there is one who has a way with painting a picture that's worth a thousand words. Diagnosed with autism and of both Italian and Scottish heritage, I dedicate myself to stick out from the crowd and tell my story through a series of paintings as a means of communicating with the world.

Salvador Dali is an inspiration of mine. He once said that what you see isn't always what you see. Those words intrigued me to say the least. I've been described as being a wise owl, since I have a way with words and the calm tendencies they bring to an otherwise bombastic situation. So I try incorporating that concept along with what Dali said into my pieces while sharing my own words of wisdom to explain things further in depth.

The majority of my pieces contain subjects with eyes but no other features. This is because not only does my style encourage seeing with our sight; but because there is far more in the world around us than meets the eye. Now to leave this on a high and happy note.
